Indoor airPLUS builds on the foundation of EPA's ENERGY STAR requirements for new homes and provides additional construction specifications to provide comprehensive indoor air quality protections in new homes.
Construction specifications under Indoor airPLUS focus on:
- moisture control systems
- heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems
- combustion-venting systems
- radon resistant construction
- low-emitting building materials.
Sources of indoor air pollution
Biological agents: such as mold, pollen, pet dander, and pests that may trigger asthma attacks or other respiratory symptoms.
Chemical agents: such as VOCs, formaldehyde, combustion products, and radon gas that can cause a wide range of health effects.
How homes earn the Indoor airPLUS label.
The builder will first design the new home to meet the ENERGY STAR Certified Home label, which is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency. During the construction process, the builder will incorporate both ENERGY STAR and Indoor airPLUS construction practices and specifications into the new home. Third-party verification can be completed within the ENERGY STAR inspection process by a RESNET-certified Home Energy Rater.
Why build to Indoor airPLUS standards
- Earn a trusted government-backed label for green construction techniques.
